Atlas
The gentle giant.
Percheron cross · 14 years old · At the Centre since 2018
Atlas came to the Centre as a neglect rescue — underweight, wary, and deeply shut down. It took the better part of a year before he'd allow someone to approach without turning away. Now, at seventeen hands, he's the largest horse in the herd and also the softest. People expect something different when they see him. They expect force, or dominance, or at least indifference. What they get instead is an animal who moves slowly, who lowers his head when someone is afraid, who seems to understand what it costs to trust again. That unexpected softness is what makes him so effective in the work. For people recovering from physical harm, or those who've spent their lives feeling too big, too much, too visible — Atlas offers something they rarely get: the experience of being met by something powerful that chooses gentleness.
