Comprehensive assessments for diagnostic clarity, treatment planning, and understanding what's actually going on — so the path forward makes sense.
Psychological assessment at Foothills is a thorough, clinically grounded process designed to answer the questions that matter — not just "What diagnosis fits?" but "What is actually going on, and what would actually help?"
Assessments may include standardized psychometric testing, clinical interviews, behavioural observation, and collateral information depending on the referral question. They result in a comprehensive written report that provides diagnostic clarity, a formulation of how the presenting concerns developed and are maintained, and concrete recommendations for treatment, support, or accommodation.
This is not a checklist. It is a careful, individualized process that honours the complexity of the person in front of us. The goal is not a label — it is understanding.
An assessment typically involves two to four sessions, depending on complexity. The first session is a clinical interview — an in-depth conversation about your history, your concerns, and what you're hoping to learn. Subsequent sessions involve testing and observation. After the assessment is complete, you'll receive a detailed written report, followed by a feedback session where we walk through the findings together, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations.
The process is thorough but not cold. We understand that being assessed can feel vulnerable, and we hold that with care. You are not a set of scores. You are a person trying to understand yourself better, and that deserves respect.
Timelines vary, but most assessments are completed within two to four weeks from the initial session. Reports are typically delivered within two weeks after the final testing session.
Not always. You can self-refer for most assessments. Some insurance providers or specific assessment types may require a physician's referral — we'll let you know if that applies to your situation when you reach out.
The full process — from initial interview to final report — typically takes two to four weeks. Individual sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. The written report is usually delivered within two weeks of the final session.
If a diagnosis is clinically appropriate, yes. But the report also includes a formulation — a narrative understanding of how your difficulties developed and how they interact. Sometimes the formulation is more useful than the diagnosis. You'll always get both.
